ABSTRACT
We surveyed Guafo Island (300 km2), an extraordinary site for wildlife in coastal
South America, located at 43º61' S, 74º75' W in southern Chile, and reasonably isolated from
the mainland. We evaluated richness of bird species and document that the island has a high
conservation value because it constitutes an important breeding locality and foraging area for
a large number of birds. These are well represented with 81 species, most important of which is
the Sooty Shearwater (Puffinus griseus) population, the northernmost breeding colony in South America, and largest colony on earth. The presence of seabird species nearby in offshore waters
(largely Procellariiformes) is of importance as well.
